"Every time an elderly person dies, it is like a library that is officially closed."
My Young Women leader Diane Nichols said that in a church lesson one time and I have yet to forget it (except I never plan on it!)
I really like that idea, because it's true: One elderly person is full of memories and advice that will soon be gone and unknown. That's why they love to talk so much. :)
I have three Great Grandparents still alive:
1. Nanny, my dad's grandma on his mom's side.
2. Grandma Marker, my mom's grandma on her mom's side.
3. Grandpa Marker, my mom's grandpa on her mom's side.
Alright, so I was home this weekend for multiple reasons (including some birthday celebrations with the Fam.) Yesterday, I went with my Mom and Brian to my Great Grandma and Grandma's house. When my Mom goes, I rarely go with her anymore because I usually have things to do, and honestly I feel bad.
I do understand that they're not going to be around much longer. I do understand that.
SO we went and it was worth it. My silly grandma is so hilarious.
I realized the other day that it would be awesome if they had yearbooks and guess what: GRANDMA DOES! I asked her about it, and then for it, and Brian, her and me looked through it for awhile. Oh my goodness, I love old things...most of the time.
Okay, I love old yearbooks!
1941--That is the year Mary Peterson (my great grandma) was a senior in high school and it is the coolest yearbook ever.
The names, the hairdos, the outfits, the clubs...the lingo!
Also, another thing about my great-granny, is that she's still got a superb memory. Her memories of when she was young--names, places, people, events--is still as fresh as yesterday is for us (most of the time). She even remembers detail.
She told us about how her and great-grampy met...an event that happened around 65 years ago.
Amazing!
My great-grandparents are still adorable and witty even in their old age. It'll be sad when they're gone. :(
